Anti-Energy Beverages

Posted by Sunday on Apr 9, 2008 at 4:01 pm in The Future

There are times when I reel from the event horizon that occurs between the present and the future.  One of these times was Aargh telling me that he’d ingested an anti-energy drink.

Now, this is where culture, society and futurism collide in a messy Sprawl upchuck: Purple Drank is a very real underground narcotic cocktail made from codeine-based cough syrup and a mixer (often Sprite, occasionally with Jolly Ranchers added for flavor) (as an aside, you can flavor any alcohol with candy, you just have to be patient) popular in the Houston, Texas rap scene.

This arguably brilliant idea - oh come off it, you want a codeine martini too - has morphed into a low-grade sleepytime beverage to counter the teeth-grinding speed tribe of energy drink consumers.  Three independent reports  (Aargh + two guests) confirm that this valerian-root and melatonin drink does indeed slow one’s roll, as advertised.  No one could remember how it tasted.

Funny how things come around! I was ‘borned’ and ‘raised up’ in South Carolina (Caroliner!) and we called any store-bought beverage a ‘drank’or sody-pop.
As-in: ‘Hay Doog, run down at the store and get us a colt drank (cold drink).’
We also referred to any brand named drank as a ‘cokoler’, not reserved for just Coke. Went something like this:
(Pop):’Hay J Dubya (J.W., that’s me), run overt yonder and git us some cokolers, its hotter n’ hale!’
(me):’Okay Pop, whut kine cokoler y’all wont?’
(Pop):’Oh, git me wun them RC cokolers … and a moon pie!’
(me): ‘Shor Pop. Kin ah git a pack o’goobers to put in mahn?’
(Pop):’You kin son, jess hurry on up, I gaht a thirst on!’
    (I’m akshully misty-eyed as I raht this rimaniss!)… sigh

where can i buy it i live in holland

  3. Sunday Says:

I don’t know, arr - even in the States I’ve only seen it in Texas. The company doesn’t seem to have a website.

I might try putting in a request in the Houston, Texas Craigslist asking someone to mail you some in exchange for something from Holland, maybe?

I’ve also seen people buy it off eBay, but it was very expensive.

    Good luck!
